In response to a 'Reconsideration Request' the Federal Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) has advised that it has reconsidered the proposed Ararat Wind Farm project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). DEWHA has re-confirmed its original decision of 3 December 2008 that the proposal is not a 'controlled action'. This means that the proposed development can proceed without further assessment and approval under the EPBC Act.

The Minister for Planning has agreed to a request to become the Responsible Authority for that part of the Ararat Wind Farm project which was lodged separately with the Northern Grampians Shire Council. The Minister will now coordinate the decision making process for the two Planning Permit Applications that comprise the Ararat Wind Farm project: PPA no. 5.2009.94.1 (5 x turbines within Northern Grampians Shire Council area); and PPA no. 09/04799 (70 turbines within Ararat Rural City Council area).

Renewable Energy Systems Australia Pty Ltd (RES Australia) is pleased to announce that in response to RES Australia's Referral application, the Victorian Minister for Planning determined on 28 November, 2008 that an Environment Effects Statement is not required for the proposed Ararat Wind Farm development. The Minister had previously decided on 14 January, 2008 that an EES was not required for the earlier proposal for 50 turbines. Due to the increased turbine numbers under investigation, RES Australia re-notified the Minister of the 76 turbine Ararat Wind Farm proposal.

The increased turbine numbers will assist in meeting the Victorian Renewable Energy Target that the Victorian Government is committed to. This is an important milestone to have reached and now means that RES Australia can progress the planning application for the Ararat Wind Farm through the planning permit process under the Planning and Environment Act, 1987 during the early part of 2009.
